I’ve spent the greater part of the last five years studying, some for my academic work and professional life but also for my own personal interests.
My personal interests revolve around those on the fringes of society in America. The underclass. Those on the darker side of the human predicament. Those wrestling with despair and distress. No matter how many rabbit holes I find myself down with regard to race, gender, and class, all roads lead to the same path. To move people forward, we need a sustained focus on real academics and strengthening of family structures/values.
For some reason, these are solutions that do not get an invite to the dinner party. While many of the current solutions and interventions are well intended, sincerity is not an adequate substitution for knowledge.
One must discern.
Growing up on the far south side of Chicago in the early 2000s taught me invaluable lessons.
I’ve learned lessons about the significance of relying on family and community.I also learned how one wrong step could lead to your demise. I’ve seen the terror of guns and violence. I’ve also seen the fruits of hard work and determination. I’ve seen what it looks like to take pride in whatever it is you do, and to do it to the best of your ability.
I am who I am today, not despite my upbringing and struggles, but directly because of them.
The culmination of these experiences drives my worldview- that being if you do the work, it will work.
